Home CCTV camera installation

Entrances, driveways and accessible areas around a property are common starting points for camera planning. The detail you want to capture, lighting conditions and camera angle affect the choice and position of equipment.

Night-time image quality varies with the camera, lighting and surroundings. Cameras can support monitoring and provide recorded footage, but they cannot guarantee that an incident will be prevented or that every detail will be captured.

Compatible systems can provide live viewing and recorded playback on a phone or other supported device. Remote access depends on the equipment, setup and internet connection. Motion alerts and recording schedules also vary by system.

Recording retention depends on storage capacity, resolution, the number of cameras and recording settings. IP cameras may use data cabling and Power over Ethernet, while other setups have different power and cabling needs.

We consider cable routes, power and a suitable location for recording equipment. Tell us whether you need a new system or want to move, replace or extend existing cameras; compatibility must be checked before equipment is reused.

Camera positions should be chosen carefully to avoid unnecessarily recording neighbouring homes or public areas. If your cameras capture beyond your property boundary, data-protection duties may apply. Consult current Information Commissioner's Office guidance and use strong passwords and supported security updates for connected equipment.
