When should you consider a rewire?
Damaged wiring, recurring electrical problems or an installation that no longer suits your needs are reasons to seek an assessment. A property's age alone does not establish that it needs a full rewire; inspection and testing help identify its condition.
An EICR can highlight defects and recommendations. Depending on what is found, targeted repairs, new circuits or a partial rewire may be more appropriate than replacing everything.
Full rewiring or a partial upgrade
A full rewire replaces wiring across the agreed installation, while a partial rewire addresses specific circuits or areas. Existing circuits that remain must be suitable for the proposed changes, so the relationship between old and new work needs checking.
Planning is an opportunity to discuss socket positions, lighting layouts, kitchen appliances, outdoor power and future needs such as an EV charger or network cabling. Agree these details before work starts to avoid unnecessary later changes.
Access, disruption and the finished work
Rewiring can require access under floors and within walls, and parts of the electrical supply may need to be isolated. Whether the home will be occupied, access to rooms and the extent of decoration all affect the plan.
The quote should clarify what is included, particularly lifting floors, chasing walls and plastering or redecorating afterwards. Relevant inspection, testing and electrical certification form part of completing the installation; timescales depend on the property and agreed scope.
